Rolex and Tudor: Partners in Crime
Tudor watches in the past were somewhat like the Rodney Dangerfield of luxury watches: they “didn’t get no respect at all!” Tudors have unfortunately sometimes been saddled with the appellation, “Poor Man’s Rolex.” That’s a shame, since the watches have always been fine quality, well-crafted timepieces since the brand’s inception in 1945. Before then, Rolex sold a hodgepodge of cheaper watches with now forgotten names like Marconi, Unicorn, and Rolco to increase the company’s market share.
Perhaps Rolex has only itself to blame for Tudors “second-class citizen” reputation. According to the definitive Rolex history by Dowling and Hess, The Best of Time, in its early advertising the company called the Tudor a “workingman’s watch.” That may have gotten the point across that it was a more affordable choice than the top of the line Rolex models, but the stigma of a lower-cost Rolex would always haunt the brand. Perhaps it was inevitable that Tudor would labor in the shadow of its incredibly successful bigger brother, the Rolex.
Rolex Pro Hunter Sea Dweller 4000 Sells for $30,000
Often times a first-time Rolex buyer is on a budget and doesn’t want to break the bank with that first luxury watch purchase. And in this economy, buying smart is always a good idea no matter what your financial spread sheets look like. Sometimes I’m asked how much a certain dollar amount, let’s take $3000 for instance, will buy in a Rolex. The short answer, with some thoughtful planning, is a lot! After all, everybody doesn’t want to drop six or eight thousand bucks or more on a watch, or simply can’t afford to do so at this stage in their life. Let’s press on to discuss which models and vintages we’re looking at in this price range of two to three thousand dollars.
Military Rolex Watches

One of the more interesting aspects to Rolex history, at least in the humble opinion of yours truly, is the connection between the company’s watches and to the military history of the past century. Long before Rolex became synonymous with uber watch in the luxury market, the watches were trusted by military men who needed the toughest, most water-resistant and dustproof watches available. For many years, Rolex watches were the benchmark for rugged, dependable quality. They were never cheap, but that didn’t prevent generations of military men and women from paying the asking price to have the best. Sometimes, the best could mean the difference between life and death. Most watch aficionados have heard of the famous British military issue Submariners of the 1960s and 1970s, but few realize the Rolex connection to the military services goes back much farther than that, and continued after that.
Watch of The Week Wednesday #9 - Datejust II
This time on Watch of the Week we have a Datejust II. As you can see in the pictures it is significantly larger than the older Datejust. Even the new Submariner with the ceramic bezel is only 40mm and the Day-Date is 41mm.

Rolex PVD
Overview
Many of our customers looking for Black PVD Rolex watches ask us how we compare to the 2 other companies based in the UK that are doing a similar PVD process to Rolex watches: Pro Hunter and Bamford and Sons. This blog post should answer that question and more...
Watch of The Week Wednesday #8 - PVD Explorer II
This is a PVD Explorer II with a PVD bezel with white lettering on the black bezel. We did something like this in the past but had a high-polish bezel with red lettering, you can see it here. This is more of a matte finish which I personlly like better. If this was my watch I would even throw on a carbon fiber maxi dial to make it pop a little more and make it a one of a kind that will turn heads.
Rolex versus Omega
There is little doubt that the biggest rivalry in luxury watches is the one between Rolex and Omega. It’s the Coke vs. Pepsi of the watch world. These two titans of the watch industry have been vying for the hearts and minds—and wallets—of customers for decades. So which is the best and is one really better than the other or is it just all marketing hype? Read on for the opinions of your humble correspondent.
In Search of the Real James Bond Watch Strap
In Part One of this article, I discussed the original watch strap worn by Sean Connery in the early James Bond flicks Goldfinger and Thunderball, and how collectors began demanding more painstaking reproductions in recent years. Now I’d like to talk about two of the best examples on the market...
Watch of The Week Wednesday #7 - Rose Gold Day-Date II
Watch of the week Wednesday has been on hiatus but now back with vengeance. We have a beautiful Rose Gold Day-Date II. This
President has an all black concentric dial with black Arabic markers. I personally love the glossy black markers on the flat black dial. It may be harder to read than traditional dials but it looks too clean and discreet not to like it.
The Day-Date II comes with a 41mm case which is significantly bigger than its predecessor, the Day-Date I, which boasts a 36mm case. This is a another timeless watch from Rolex who comes out with amazing designs even if they are very small changes. What do you think about the black on black dial?
Timeless Watches: Choosing Your First Rolex
Probably the single most commonly asked question on the watch forums is this: which Rolex is the best first Rolex to buy for someone new to the brand? A frequently heard variation on this theme is to ask which Rolex to buy if you could only have one...
Rolex Watch Forums
What’s the deal with watch forums? I used to wonder the same thing, and now I think I know: they’re the best thing to happen to watch lovers since
John Harrison perfected the highly accurate watch, or chronometer. With the explosion in information available on the ‘net, it was probably inevitable that watch fans would create discussion boards just for themselves. I started surfing them around 2003, which was actually rather late in the game since they had been around since the ‘90s. I never claimed to be a trailblazer…
